Captain's Day 28 June 2023

Captains 2022/23A lovely day for our Captain's Day this year and some very good scores. Congratulations to Di for a winning score of 42 points. And thanks to Viv and Linda for everything they do for the club

Autumn Meeting 14 September 2022

Prize winners Autumn 22Despite forecast rain, the day stayed dry for our Autumn Meeting. Numbers were down because of the forecast, and only 13 members completed the round. Therefore there were prizes for almost everyone. Congratulations to Linda who won the scratch prize, and to Maggie and Angela who came in with the lowest nett scores in Divisions 1 and 2. Viv had beautifully wrapped bags of Autumn goodies, mango chutney, wine, chocolates and cheeses, and these prizes were greatly appreciated.

Spring Meeting April 27 2022

Spring 2022 1st in Div 1Spring 2022 1st in Div 2

On a chilly spring morning, 18 of us played 18 holes in a stroke play competition for our Spring Meeting. The greens were quite tough as they had recently been hollow tined, but some players overcame this and presented some good scores. Congratulations to Evelyn for breaking 100 and winning the scratch prize with a gross 96 and to Laine for coming first in Division 1. Also congratulations to Maggie who brought her handicap down with nett 69, and first prize in the second division. Currently our divisions divide at up to 36 course handicap and above 36 course handicap.

After the game we enjoyed a meal in the Blenheim suite with three choices of main and dessert courses. The prizes were all plants and made a beautiful display on the table. Many thanks to Viv and Linda for all the organisation involved and for making the day go so well.

Autumn Meeting September 22 2021

Autumn Meeting 2021 1st PrizeWe had a lovely sunny autumn day for our Autumn Meeting in 2021. 24 members took part and enjoyed 18 holes of golf. We enjoyed a half way house with some of Rose's famous quiche to sustain us, and thank Melvyn and Doug for manning the hut. Congratulations go to Evelyn for winning the scratch prize, and to Sue and Pat W for coming first in divisions one and two respectively. The hotel chef surpassed himself with a delicious buffet meal served in the Manor House dining room. The prize winners all took home some pretty umbrellas and hope that they will be insurance against the need to use them this winter. Many thanks go to Viv for decorating the tables and buying the prizes, and to Linda for organising such an enjoyable day.

Captain's Day 18 August 2021

What with covid restrictions, ill health and bad weather, we wondered if we would every be able to enjoy Captain's Day this year, but at last it came round and on Wednesday 18 August, 26 ladies enjoyed a round of golf and 29 sat down together for a meal in the hotel. This was for the first time since 2019 and wonderful to be back together in the same room with our friends. We were pleased to be able to celebrate Linda's captaincy over 2 very difficult years: not only because of the pandemic, but also because Linda hasn't been able to play for many months because of her own health problems. It was lovely to see her at the meal as well as some of our other friends who have moved further away, or are no longer able to get out on the golf course.

As for the game, the morning started off damp underfoot but warmed up to a pleasant day by the end of the round. Judith Macleod, (who has also had some medical problems herself) played an exceptional round, scoring 37 points, and won the Captain's Cup and Captain's Prize. Sue Pierce came in 1st after Judith, with 36 points, and there was a countback for 2nd and 3rd, with four ladies on 33. Prizes went to Sheila Marshall and Shirley Whitworth, with special mention to Viv Williams and Laine Talamo.

A meal of cod with potatoes and vegetables was served to everyone followed by strawberries and cream. We held a bottle raffle for prizes brought by the ladies, and the prize-giving followed. The winners had a choice of handbags, and other prizes of purses were given for front and back 9, nearest the pin and nearest the line.

We all thanked Linda for her hard work as Captain, and presented her with cards signed by the members, and a potted hydrangea for her garden. Thanks also went to Viv for her beautiful menus and table decorations, to Rose for the delicious food at the half way house, and to the committee and handicap committee for their part in making the event go with a swing..

Club Outing to the Oaks Sports Centre 7 July 2021

Before the gameNineteen ladies enjoyed an away day to the Oaks Golf Course at Woodmansterne at the beginning of July. The weather forecast was not good, but luckily it remained dry enough for buggies to be allowed on course, and we only had to put up our umbrellas once. We began the day with bacon or egg butties in the club house, and came in to a tea with sandwiches and scones.

The course was in very good condition, with greens considerably faster that we are used to at Coulsdon. Evelyn was a worthy winner with 32 points, and she and her partner, Laine, won the pairs competition with an aggregate of 60 points. The prizes were bottles of wine and chocolates beautifully wrapped by Viv.

Jan had spent a lot of time organising the day, but unfortunately was unable to play because of a shoulder injury. Our thanks go to her for the work she put in, and for seeing us off at the beginning. We were also pleased that Linda was able to come up at the end to present the prizes.

Family and Friends 14 May 2021

Family and Friends 2021 winnersToday we had our Family and Friends Day - Joy Reed (a past Captain) gave a Trophy for this day and would have been pleased we are still playing this FUN Match. I have to say the Course is not in good condition at the moment - we can't eat inside yet, so a massive thank you to all who played in 10deg temperature. Normally we would have all changed and had a nice Dinner in pleasant surroundings (wine/flowers) on the tables etc. Thanks to Judith who checked our score cards, also to Rose and Jack who stepped in at the last moment to play with me and Melvyn, as our Lady Captain Linda has been in Hospital since last Friday.

Three couples had 44 points each, the winners were Viv and Melvyn on the back 9 from Corrie and Dick, on the back 9 from Di and Ian.

Spring Meeting 28 April 2021

It was lovely to be back, trying to enjoy a traditional Spring meeting, after over a year of "lockdown Golf" and no golf. We had hoped to have a tea with sandwiches and scones outside, and a prize giving afterwards. However the weather was not favourable, so the event was cut short so that everyone could head home and warm up. Twenty ladies played, and some good scores were returned. Congratulations to Evelyn for her Scratch score of 95, and to Shirley Whitworth for winning division 1 with a nett 68, and to Sue Pierce for winning division 2 with nett 71.

Hector Fudge Trophy 23 April 2021

The Hector Fudge Trophy is played annually as a competition between the four clubs at Coulsdon, the Men, the Artisans, the Veterans and the Ladies. It was set up in honour of Hector who spent his whole life working and helping golfers at Coulsdon.

The Captains of the four clubs play together, the vice captains, the treasurers and the sercretaries (or their representatives). Stableford aggregate scores are then calculated for each club.

For only the second time in the club's history, this year, the ladies team were victorious with a score of 135 stableford points. The previous occasion was 2008.

Because of lockdown regulations the teams enjoyed a drink on the terrace after the game but were unable to have a meal in the hotel.

Congratulations to the victorious team of Linda Oram, Viv Williams, Corrie Hibberd and Gladys Edwards.

Invitation Day 17th July 2019

Winning team

We had a lovely sunny day for our Invitation Day this year. We played a team game in teams of 4. 2 Stableford scores were taken on par 5 holes, 3 on par 4s and all four scores on par 5s. The winning team came in with a respectable 111 points. Congratulations to Evelyn and Laine and their partners Jill and Karen. Players were refreshed at the 10th hole "Oasis bar" with Pimm's and sandwiches and strawberries, and the hotel provided a tasty meal of salmon and cheesecake at the end of the round.

Autumn Meeting Sept 20th 2017

Scratch prize winner

Our most consistent player, Evelyn, again won the scratch prize at the Autumn Meeting, with a gross 95. All other results were over the 100 mark, which reflected the damp and windy conditions on the day. But things soon cheered up when we saw the beautiful prize table full of flowers, and the delicious meal that the chef at Coulsdon Manor had produced for us. Everyone agreed that it was one of the best meals we'd had. Other prize winners were Jan who took first prize in Division 1, and Annmarie who won Division 2.

Invitation Day 2017

Invitation Day winners

The winning team on Invitation Day

We had a good turn out on Invitation Day, with 7 teams of 4 competing for the floral prizes. The format was a four ball taking the 2 best scores on par five holes, 3 best scores on par 4 holes and all four scores on par 3s. The team of Judith Macleod, her guest, Joy Fletcher, and Evelyn Brodie and her guest, Ann Rold, came in first with and excellent score of 114 Stableford points. As usual the prize table was beautiful with orchids and roses and lillies. The hotel provided a meal of chicken or salmon followed by strawberries and cream. Everyone agreed that it was a most enjoyable day.

Spring Meeting May 3rd 2017

Evelyn and Rose

Our Spring Meeting this year was held on a rather damp May morning, and for the first time we did not include the afternoon 9 hole greensomes competition. A field of 26 players competed for some beautiful prizes of planted bowls and hanging baskets which Rose and her committee had chosen. We had a very tasty buffet meal with a choice of gammon, chicken and risotto. Congratulations go to Evelyn for an amazing 86 gross to win the scratch prize in adverse weather, and also to Linda for her first prize in the Silver Division and to Rose for coming first in the Bronze Division. Many thanks to Rose and her committee for organising such an enjoyable event.

January 2017, Gladys gets an Eagle

Gladys and Rose

Congratulations to Gladys Edwards for scoring an eagle 2 on the par 4 8th hole on 25th January.

Ladies and Artisans June 2016

Ladies and Artisans 2016Viv writes: "Thank you soooooo much for playing today. Sorry it was such a slow game and Brian, John, Peter and Iris were unable to stay for the meal. Nigel, thanks for stepping in for Brian. Also thanks to Iris for agreeing to play in Rose's place at such short notice. Very well done to Annmarie and Issy for coming 1st with a net 73. 2nd Vivien and Brian net 73.5. 3rd Beryl and Jim net 74.5".

The George Pack Trophy May 2016

George Pack 2016The George Pack trophy is a needle match between the Men's club and the Ladies'. This year it resulted in a draw. Lady Captain, Viv, commented "A lovely day on Friday, played with real Gentlemen, lovely weather and good company. No one seemed in a rush to go home, and a good result for the Match."

Past Captains' Meal 2015

Past Captains lunch

In October eightteen past captains gathered together for an Italian meal in Banstead.

Vivien's Drive In. November 2015

Viv's drive in groupThe day dawned very early, but mild and dry. We all congregated on the 1st tee, warmed by coffee and Baileys, and lots of good things to eat to see Viv off on her first day as Captain. For a surprise Viv reminded us that in a former life she was a hairdresser, and provided us all with electric blue, pink and blonde wigs to wear on the course - what a sight for sore eyes that was to behold!

Angela and Viv Linda was the nearest to guess where Viv's ball would land, and Carol F made short work of a very muddy and increasingly windy course, and managed to score 25 points. Others trailed far in her wake. Lets hope the course gets easier through the winter, and that Viv's year will be blessed with sunshine.

Autumn Meeting 2015

CCLGC members at the Autumn Meeting 2015Unfortunately the Autumn Meeting day this year was one very wet day between two sunny ones. We struggled round the morning round getting wetter and wetter, and gave up the afternoon round, as no-one relished the idea of going out again once they'd dried out for lunch. Molly was able to persuade the chef to bring forward our meal to an earlier time, and we rang round those who were only coming to the meal. Luckily everyone could manage that, and we had a very tasty meal, which everyone enjoyed. Molly's prizes of smellies were much appreciated. Evelyn won the scratch prize with an impressive score of 90. A score of 74 nett was shared by all three of the winners of each division, Sheila Marshall for silver, Carol Foley for Bronze 1 and Dianne Evans for Bronze 2.

Invitation Day

invitation day winnersWe were delighted that thity-six ladies were able to play in our Invitation Day on 15th July. Our guests came from 12 different clubs and joined us in a team competition, playing in fours we took the best two scores on par 5s, best 3 on par 4s and all the scores on par 3s. We were well looked after at the half-way house, with a great selection of nibbles, and many kind helpers. Molly and her team came out on top of the competition with an amazing score of 116 points. They were delighted to win some picnic bags, and the other prizes were all picnic related. After the game we all enjoyed a delicious meal in the hotel.

Druce Trophy 2015

Druce team 2015Congratulations to our team who took part in the Druce Trophy at the RAC club at Epsom. On a fine but blowy day in July, they tackled a challenging course along with 60 other Surrey clubs. Betty and Viv in the morning carded a round of 115, and in the afternoon Evelyn and Carol managed to reduce the eclectic score by 15 shots. Captain Molly and Secretary Corrie joined them to support and cheer as they went round.

Charity Day

Waltz game winners

Molly's Charity Day game raised money for her Captain's Charity "The Children's Trust". We played a game in teams of 3, called a waltz, 123,123, we took the best score on the 1st hole, the 2 best scores on the 2nd and all three scores on the third and so on. On a lovely sunny day it made for a relaxed fun game, and some impressive sounding scores. Elaine, Jean and Gladys came in on top with 69 Stableford points.

After the game we all repaired to Rose's beautiful garden, and Rose, as usual, had surpassed herself making delicious sandwiches and pavlovas for everyone. We all enjoyed playing games to raise money for the charity - guess the weight of the cake, guess how many tees were in the jar, and how many pieces of pasta. Betty came nearest to the cake's weight of 2 lb 12 oz. and Joan correctly estimated the pasta and Judith the tees. There was a large supply of home baked cakes to buy, and everyone went home well fed and well loaded with cakes.

Many thanks as usual to Rose for all the effort she puts into hosting the event, and also to Molly for preparing the day, doing the baking, providing the prizes and helping Rose get her garden ready. Thanks also to Viv and Betty and Adrian in their help in preparations for the tea party.

Captain's Day 2015

Captain's prize 2015After a very blustery Tuesday, Captain's Day dawned sunny and still, the course was in great condition, and we had nothing to complain about - except some of us didn't play as well as we knew we could. We were well refreshed at the Oasis Bar on 10th, helped by Mary, Marie, Sheila and Joy and a glass of Pimm's. Everyone came in after the game and were joined by a goodly number of ladies who hadn't been able to play, and 39 of us sat down to a delicious meal of curry, pork or quiche, followed by strawberries or pannacotta. Molly had produced some luxury toiletries for prizes, and some very pretty geraniums for those who had struggled but not achieved top scores. Betty scored highest with 33 points, followed by Carol F and Maureen both on 30. Sheila Marshall got the longest drive and Rose was nearest the pin on the 6th. It was a great day and a very sociable event all round.

Spring Meeting 2015

Spring meeting 2015 Scratch winnerWe had been warned beforehand that the greenkeepers would be hollow-tining the greens on the two days before our meeting, and sure enough all greens were holey and sandy, which made for some interesting putting.

Aside from that, we had a dry day for our event, though possibly not the hottest sunny one that we’d been promised. Twenty-seven ladies took to the field in the morning, and twenty in the afternoon. We were greeted at the half-way-house by Joy and Marie and Sheila Clarke, and a delicious spread of the usual delicacies, washed down by a glass of Pimm’s. A light breeze had turned into quite a strong wind, and the poor ladies had quite a job preventing the gazebo from blowing away. Luckily they were helped by Viv’s husband, Melvin, who fortuitously had 4 screw-drivers in his car which substituted very efficiently as tent pegs, and prevented the whole assembly taking off and floating across Coulsdon.

Spring Meeting silver division first, Betty

Everyone was very pleased when they came into the Blenheim suite to be offered a glass of wine, courtesy of both Jill Reeves, celebrating her 80th year, and Ann Jarrett’s legacy to the club. Viv had, as always, excelled herself with pretty menus and pretty arrangements of daffodils on the tables. Thanks to Noel, the chef, we had a very delicious meal; both the lasagne and the chicken were enjoyed. Jan asked me to note down that she had not complained about the meal at all! Whilst Marjorie declared it was the “best meal ever”. The raffle to raise money for the Captain’s Charity raised £158.

Molly had bought some lovely prizes from Woodcote Grove Nurseries, unfortunately between Molly and Elaine choosing them the previous week, and the company delivering them to us, they had failed to water the plants, and some were looking so bedraggled that Molly had to return 12 to the Nursery and exchange them for new plants. We are very sorry that Molly had to go to all this trouble, and very grateful for her hard work.

Spring Meeting pretty tables

The Scratch prize went to Corrie Hibberd, who managed a gross 91 despite the bumpy nature of the greens. 1st in the Silver division was Betty with nett 75, the Bronze 1 winner was Sheila Boniface with nett 73, and Bronze 2 was won by Maureen Fox with nett 75. The afternoon winners were Jan and Rose with nett 38.25. Corrie, Sheila Marshall and Judith all achieved birdies, and Corrie went away with the Officer’s Vase.

Many thanks to Molly and her Committee and to Noel, the chef, for all the effort they put into the day and making it so successful.

Molly's Drive in and the Holly and Ivy

Molly's drive-inAt the AGM in November, Molly Britton took over as Captain, thanking Elaine for all she had done for the club in 2014. Molly's Drive in took place the following week, when a fine day allowed 21 members to take to the course, Deidre Tamlyn correctly guessed where Molly's drive would land, and Carol Foley won first prize in the competition. At the AGM Molly announced her charity, The Children's Trust, and was able to start raising money for them by selling Christmas Cards, and introducing a "3 putt pot" to be handed round after every game. Looking forward to 2015 Molly told everyone that the club outing will be to Westerham golf club in April, Molly's drive-inand the holiday will be two nights, and 3 rounds of golf at Old Thorns Golf Club at Liphook in Hampshire at the beginning of September.

After the Drive in, the next event in the calendar was the Christmas lunch, and the Holly and Ivy competition. 13 members braved the mud to play a 13 hole game, and Betty won the first prize, donated by Vice Captain, Viv, of a pretty jewel case. Everyone enjoyed the festive meal provided by the hotel, and the chance to sing Christmas Carols, and try a hand at Molly's tricky Christmas quiz.

AGM and Charity Cheque

Poppy Factory cheque Our AGM was held on Wednesday 12th November, when all the business of the club was discussed, and Elaine handed over her role as Captain to Molly Britton. For her final act as Captain, Elaine invited Charlie from the Poppy Factory, www.poppyfactory.org, to come and receive a cheque for £1560, the amount raised by the ladies for this charity during the year. We were delighted to support this worthy cause and enjoyed all the fundraising events that Elaine organised this year. Molly announced that next year her charity will be The Children's Trust. www.thechildrenstrust.org.uk.

Autumn Meeting Sept 17th 2014

Autumn meeting 2014At our Autumn meeting on 17th September we enjoyed 27 holes of golf on an increasingly warm day after a misty start. Linda triumphed with a spectacular gross 86, and brought her handicap down in the process. The prizes were a beautiful selection of plants and planted bowls. After a glass of wine to celebrate Corrie's 60th birthday everyone enjoyed a meal in the Blenheim room. Other winners were Evelyn in the Silver Division, Sheila Blake in Bronze 1 and Rose in Bronze 2. Beryl came within 12 inches of the line on the 18th, and Shirley and Carol were the winners of the afternoon Greensomes competition.

Holiday to Sandford Springs 2014

Sandford SpringsAt the end of August, 20 ladies went on a club holiday to Sandford Springs Golf Club near Kingsclere in Hants. On the first day we played a 9 hole Texas Scramble on the Wood Course, and were amazed at the good scores possible with 4 peoples' best shots. Betty, Dianne, Corrie and Molly won that one.

Party at Sandford SpringsAfter a very good meal and a bit of wine we all had a night's sleep and headed out onto the course again for a Stableford competition. The drizzly rain didn't deter us, and Annmarie romped home on the Park and Wood courses with an excellent 30 points to be the day's winner. Another good meal followed and then on the last day we battled for the Alston Trophy. Corrie just won that from Sheila B, with 23 points, playing on the Lakes and Park courses.

Buggies at Sandford SpringsWith prizes for all and a final snack we piled into cars and headed for the motorway and home.

Alston Trophy winner, CorrieMany thanks to Elaine and Viv for organising everything so efficiently and for a great choice of venue.

Texas scramble with the Vets

Vets Texas ScrambleThe annual Texas Scramble with the Vet's club was played on Friday 15th August. The winners were Viv and Philippa with Des and Dennis, with a exceptionally good nett 49. 2nd came Rose Sheila Boniface, Roger and Tony with a nett 52.

Ann's Tea

Ann's teaToday we remembered our dear friend Ann Jarrett, with a tea party in her memory, and made possible by the generous bequest that she left to the club "for the ladies to enjoy themselves". Over 40 members got together for a summer afternoon tea, complete with Pimm's, at tables laden with sandwiches, scones and jam and clotted cream, and cakes of all varieties. Amongst the conversation we remembered Ann for all her kindnesses and her cheerful good humour. A book of photos was pored over, and we admired the photos of Ann and exclaimed at how young she and we all looked only 8 years ago when she was Captain.

For more photos of the day follow this link to our Flikr album. 11 August 2014.

Ladies and Artisans 2014

Ladies and ArtisansWe played our annual game with the Coulsdon Court Artisans Club on Friday 8th August. It was another sunny hot day, and the teams paired up for a greensomes medal. The winners were Molly Britton and Brian James with an impressive nett score of 59, helped no doubt by Brian's hole-in-one on the 11th, for which he kindly bought drinks for the teams when we came in. The day was rounded off with a meal of bangers and mash and ice cream. (Many thanks to Nigel Messett and the Artisans for the the picture).

Charity Day 2014

Poppy Factory Charity DayOn a sunny summer's day we enjoyed a fun game of golf and then a delicious tea in Rose's pretty garden. The game of golf was a "Waltz", with three players in each team and was won by Judith and her team. As usual Rose provided a surfeit of sandwiches and cakes, and we guessed the weight of the cake, and played garden darts, and bought cakes and recipes to raise money for The Poppy Factory, which is Captain, Elaine's charity for the year. We were delighted to welcome Charlie from the Poppy Factory to the event. In all we raised £248 in just one afternoon. And had fun doing so. Thanks very much to Rose for the loan of her garden again.
